The trip

Climb the minaret over Kampala, then sleep beside the river that runs to the Mediterranean.

Two halves, and both are strong. Kampala first: the Uganda National Mosque, one of the largest in East Africa, whose minaret you climb for a view of the whole city; the Kabaka's palace, still the seat of the Buganda kingdom; and Owino, a market so large and so loud that it is its own kind of landmark. Then east to Jinja, where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria and starts a journey of six and a half thousand kilometres. The lodge there sits on the river itself. What you do with the second half is yours: a boat to the source, grade five rafting, tubing, a zip line through the canopy, or a chair on a deck above moving water. Prayer mats are placed in every room as standard, mini-bars arrive empty, and a Friday arrival means Jumu'ah with the local community.

The minaret at the National Mosque is a spiral staircase and a view of the whole city. It is the best thing to do first in Kampala.
