Unpack once. Bled, Bohinj, Postojna, Velika Planina and the Soca all come to you.
Slovenia is small enough that you never have to move hotels, which for a family is the whole argument. You stay six nights in Ljubljana, a capital you can cross on foot, and drive out each morning: to Bled and its island church, reached by a pletna boat rowed the way it has been for three hundred years; into the karst at Postojna, where an electric train takes you five kilometres underground; up to Velika Planina, a shepherds' plateau of wooden huts and grazing cattle; and west to the Soca, a river so green it looks tinted. Ljubljana's Islamic Centre is a short ride from the hotel, mini-bars come empty, and the qibla is marked in the room on request.

Private transfer from Ljubljana airport, then a first evening walk along the Ljubljanica, where the old town's cafés line both banks.

A private four-hour walk: the baroque town hall and its arcaded courtyard, Robba's Fountain of the Three Rivers, the Cathedral of St Nicholas, then the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle.

A private guided day at Bled: the castle on its cliff, the terraces above the lake, and the traditional pletna boat out to the island in the middle of the water.

Five kilometres underground
Into the karst: Postojna Cave by electric train through its formations, then Predjama Castle, built into the mouth of a cave in a 123m cliff.

The shepherds' plateau
A day on Velika Planina among conifers and pasture: the herdsmen's village, the Preskar Museum, the Veternica cave and a walk across the high meadows.

West into Triglav National Park with a private guide: Bovec, the Virje waterfall, the great Soca gorge and the Napoleon Bridge above Kobarid.
