The trip

A narrow-gauge railway that loops through a figure of eight, and the longest gondola in the world.

This is the version of Serbia that Serbs take their own families to. You open and close in Belgrade, and spend the middle three nights up on Zlatibor at a thousand metres, where the air changes. The Sargan Eight is the point: a 760mm narrow-gauge railway that climbs a mountain by looping through a figure of eight, two hours aboard a train called Nostalgija. Next to it is Drvengrad, the wooden village the film director Emir Kusturica built for a film and then kept. There is the open-air museum at Sirogojno, fifty-five old houses moved there to be saved, the rimstone pools of Stopica cave, the Gostilje waterfall, and a day on Tara among lakes and the viewpoint at Banjska Stena. On the way back you ride the Gold Gondola, the longest panoramic gondola on earth.

A railway that climbs a mountain by tying itself in a knot. The Sargan Eight is the only narrow-gauge line of its kind left in Europe.
