The trip

Three primates, one lake, and a Muslim quarter that has been in Kigali longer than the city has been a capital.

Rwanda is small and green and improbably orderly, and you can cross most of it in an afternoon. This route uses that. Kigali first, including Nyamirambo, the old Muslim quarter and the most alive part of the city, with the Masjid Al-Fatah at the middle of it. Then north to Volcanoes National Park for the gorilla trek, an hour with a habituated family on a forested volcano, and a golden monkey trek the day after. West to Lake Kivu at Gisenyi for a day that asks nothing of you. Then south to Nyungwe, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, for the chimpanzee trek and the canopy walkway strung sixty metres above the forest floor. Prayer mats are in every room, mini-bars come empty, and the mosque nearest each base is named before you travel.

Nyamirambo is where Kigali actually lives: the mosque, the tailors, the barbers, the food. It is worth more than an hour.
