The trip

Pink city, blue city, golden city, and a night in a desert camp under the stars.

Rajasthan is colour-coded and the route follows it. Jaipur is the pink city: Amber Fort on its ridge, the Sheesh Mahal lined with mirrors, the Hawa Mahal built so the women of the court could watch the street unseen. Between Jaipur and Jodhpur the road passes through Ajmer, and the Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, one of the most visited Islamic shrines in South Asia, is on the itinerary rather than an optional detour. Jodhpur is the blue city, under the walls of Mehrangarh. Jaisalmer is the golden one, a living fort of yellow sandstone in the Thar desert, and the last night is in a camp at Sam with a camel ride, folk music and dinner in the dunes.

The Dargah Sharif at Ajmer is on the way, not an excursion. Eight hundred years of pilgrims have taken the same road.
