The trip

Three days of Seoul, then a volcanic island of waterfalls, craters and an alpaca ranch.

Jeju is what Koreans do with a week off, and it earns it. The first three days are Seoul at its best: Nami Island straight from the airport, Gyeongbokgung Palace in a hanbok, the Seoul Central Mosque at Itaewon, a cruise on the Han, N Seoul Tower and Nanta. Then you fly south to an island built by a volcano. Cheonjiyeon falls drop straight into a pool you can walk to. Seongsan Ilchulbong is a crater rising out of the sea that you climb for the sunrise. Camellia Hill and the Arte Museum are for the photographs, the alpaca ranch and Maze Land are for the children, and the Olle market is for eating. Domestic flights both ways are in the price, along with every entrance fee, every lunch and every dinner.

Seongsan Ilchulbong is a crater that rose out of the sea. You climb it in the dark to be at the top when the light comes.
