A full day of Sarajevo's Islamic heritage, then rivers, islands and the Adriatic coast.
The trip
Sarajevo is the only European capital where the adhan has never stopped, and this trip gives it a whole day: Gazi Husrev-beg's mosque, madrasa and library, the clock tower that has kept prayer time since the seventeenth century, the Sufi tekke, Svrzo's House, the Islamic Arts Museum. From there the route runs through Bosnia's water country, Jajce's waterfall in the middle of town, the Una river at Bihac, Strbacki Buk, then over the border to Plitvice and down to the Dalmatian coast. Split for the Roman palace and a private boat to the Blue Cave. Mostar's Old Bridge and the Blagaj tekke on the drive south. Three closing nights in Dubrovnik.
Sarajevo is where the muezzin, the church bell and the synagogue have shared one small valley for five hundred years. You feel it before anyone explains it.
