The trip

Europe's largest gorge, its oldest settlement, and a capital that never quite sleeps.

Belgrade sits where the Sava runs into the Danube, and it has been fought over for that reason for two thousand years. You stay five nights in the centre and go out from there. One day follows the Danube east to the Iron Gate, the largest gorge in Europe, past the medieval fortress of Golubac to Lepenski Vir, the oldest organised settlement on the continent, eight thousand years old. Another goes north into Vojvodina, to the Fruska Gora monasteries, the honey museum at Sremski Karlovci and the Petrovaradin fortress, sixteen kilometres of tunnels above Novi Sad. In between there is a panoramic day through the city itself, a sunset cruise on the river, and a day that is simply yours. Belgrade's Bajrakli mosque, built around 1575, is the last of the city's Ottoman mosques still standing and still in use.

Lepenski Vir is eight thousand years old and was found by accident. It is the oldest organised settlement in Europe, and almost nobody visits it.
