The trip

Two European countries where the mosque is the town square, not a footnote on the map.

Albania and Kosovo are the part of Europe most travellers skip and most Muslim travellers would love, because here the Islamic story is not preserved behind glass, it is still running. Kruja is Skanderbeg's mountain capital, with a bazaar and the Dollma tekke, a small domed shrine still in use. Shkodra has the Ebu Beker mosque and the Rozafa castle above the lake. Prizren, the cultural capital of Kosovo, is a UNESCO-layered Ottoman town of filigree silversmiths and the great Sinan Pasha mosque. Pristina holds the Carshi mosque from the fifteenth century, the Imperial Mosque built under Mehmed the Conqueror in 1461, and a Turkish bath complex from 1470. Between them the route puts you on a boat for a full day on Komani Lake, into the Albanian Alps by water, where the walls rise from 170m to 2,400m.

The Imperial Mosque at Pristina was built in 1461 and has never stopped being used. Very little in Europe can say that.
